Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On January 9, 1983, the Contadora Group was formed
On this day, 42 years ago, January 9, 1983 (November 26, 1982, the Contadora Group was formed. On January 9, 1983, the foreign ministers of Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico and Panama in Central America held a meeting on the island of Contadora, Panama. They specifically discussed and negotiated the settlement of Central American disputes and adopted the "Initiative for the Peaceful Resolution of Central American Issues", calling on the five Central American countries to negotiate directly without external interference and requiring all foreign military advisers to withdraw from the area and stop sending weapons here. Since then, these four countries have been called the "Contadora Group" internationally. Contadora Island is located in the Panama Gulf of the Pacific Ocean about 80 kilometers southeast of the City of Barnabas. It is the closest island to the land among the Pearl Islands, with an area of only 3 square kilometers. The word Contadora means counting and counting in Spanish. There is also an interesting anecdote about its naming. In 1513, Spanish colonist Balboa landed from the Atlantic Ocean, crossed the Isthmus of Barnabas, and reached the Pacific Ocean called the South Sea by the Indians. Soon, the colonists 'iron hooves visited more than a hundred islands of large and small in the Panama Gulf of the Pacific Ocean, and countless pearls were found on the islands, so they named these islands the Pearl Islands. They collected pearls from each island to the island closest to the land to count the number, and shipped them to Europe. Over time, counting the number-"Contadora" became the name of the island. After the establishment of the Contadora Group, it required Central American countries to abandon armed confrontation, refrain from taking any action that might aggravate the situation, and strive to resolve disputes between Central American countries through peaceful negotiations. The Contadora Group countries oppose the interference of superpowers or any other country in the internal affairs of Central American countries or the delineation of spheres of influence in Central America. It has more than once appealed to the leaders of the United States, the Soviet Union, Cuba and other relevant countries, asking them to stop interfering in the affairs of Central American countries and allow the people of Central American countries to solve the problems of the region themselves without external interference. In order to peacefully resolve the Central American conflict, the Contadora Group countries have not only convened many meetings themselves, but also jointly convened a nine foreign ministers 'meeting with relevant countries such as El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua to seek a peaceful solution to Central American issues. On July 17, 1983, the Contadora Group countries also held a meeting in Cancun, Mexico, and issued the Cancun Declaration on Peace in Central America. Reaffirms the principles of equal national autonomy, cooperation in the economic and social fields, and peaceful settlement of disputes, and puts forward suggestions such as stopping foreign interference, withdrawing foreign military advisers, and stopping arms sales. This is another important step taken by the Contadora Group to resolve Central American problems. In September 1984, the Contadora Group countries drew up the "Central American Peace Treaty (Draft)" and carried out a lot of diplomatic activities to sign and realize the draft treaty. The Group's activities to maintain stability and peace in Central America have received general support from the international community. The United Nations Security Council has issued a resolution requiring the Contadora Group to keep the Council informed of its work and called on relevant countries to cooperate fully with the group.
