Breaking-News >> TodayHistory Britain and Egypt sign agreement on joint management of Sudan
The Sudan Condominium Agreement was an agreement signed between Britain and Egypt in Cairo after suppressing the Sultan Mahdi Uprising of 1881- 1889. On January 19, 1899, the British and Egyptian signed the Agreement on the Co-Administration of Sudan. It is stipulated that the military and civil governance of Sudan shall be in the hands of the British-appointed governor. Most of the administrative costs of managing Sudan shall be borne by Egypt, but all the profits from the "development" of Sudan shall be enjoyed by the British. In 1924, Britain abolished the agreement and Sudan came under full British rule. The Treaty of Anglo-Egyptian Alliance was concluded in 1936, restoring the co-management system. In 1951, Egypt announced the abolition of its Agreement on Governance. Sudan became independent in 1956.
