On this day, 40 years ago, on March 11, 1985 (January 20, 1985 in the lunar calendar), Gorbachev was elected General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev was born on March 2, 1931 into a peasant family in the village of Privornoye in the Stavropol Krai in southern Russia. He worked as a combine harvester driver at the agricultural machinery station in his hometown for five years from the age of 15. He graduated from the Law Department of Moscow University in 1955 and joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1952 during his studies. After graduating from college, he returned to his hometown of Stavropol and began to work in the Party and League. At the age of 24, he became deputy minister of the Communist Youth League of Stavropol City, and a year later he was promoted to the first secretary of the Communist Youth League of the city. From 1958 to 1962, he successively served as the second secretary and first secretary of the Stavropol Border District Committee of the Communist Youth League. Since 1962, he has served as the party leadership of a certain department of the Border Region Farm and Farm Production Administration and the minister of the Border Region Party Committee. From 1966 to 1968, he served as the first secretary of the Stavropol City Party Committee. In 1967, he completed a correspondence course at the local agricultural college and obtained a degree. During the ten years from 1968 to 1978, he served successively as the second secretary and first secretary of the Party Committee of Stavropol Krai. Since June 1970, he has been elected continuously as a representative of the 8th to 11th Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union. In April 1971, he was elected as a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union at the 24th National Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In November 1978, he replaced Kurakov, who passed away suddenly, and entered the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union as Secretary in charge of Agriculture. In November 1979, he was elected as an alternate member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The following year, he was promoted to a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee, becoming the youngest member of the Political Bureau. Thatcher and Gorbachev met in Moscow
