"Yuan Datou" becomes legal tender

"Yuan Datou" silver coin

On August 1, 1915, the country began to unify silver coins, and the Yuantou Silver Dollar became the only legal silver coin.

In February 1914, the Beiyang Government promulgated the "National Currency Regulations" to unify the currency. At the same time, a currency system bureau was set up to mint and issue new silver coins with Yuan Shikai's head engraved on them, called "Yuan Toucoin." The coin weighs 7 coins and 2 cents. It has a novel style and uniform pattern. The weight and color can strictly follow the prescribed standards. It is obviously superior to other old coins of different colors. After the issuance of Yuantou coins, they gradually became the main currency circulating in various places. On August 1, the Bank of China, Bank of Communications and the Money Industry Association agreed to cancel all other currencies in the past and only Yuantou coins were circulated.

Key words: August 1, 1915, Yuan Datou
