On this day 60 years ago, on July 18, 1965 (June 20, 1965 lunar calendar), the Latin American Parliament was established. On July 18, 1965, members of the parliaments of Latin American countries and regions held a meeting in Lima and announced the establishment of the organization. In 12 weeks in 1964, 150 parliamentarians from Latin American countries met to make this decision. The purpose of the organization is to promote and coordinate the Latin American integration movement politically, economically and culturally. The members include 16 countries and regions including Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Suriname, Venezuela and the Netherlands Antilles. In February 1975, the seventh meeting was held in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, to condemn the new US trade law, pointing out that it contains discriminatory and coercive content, and advocating the establishment of just international economic relations. In July 1979, the ninth regular meeting was held in Mexico City, emphasizing the strengthening of the Latin American economic system and the opposition to imperialist and colonial activities in Latin America.
