On March 4, 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945) took office as President of the United States (March 4, 1933 - January 20, 1937). He broke with American convention and was re-elected president three times in a row. When Roosevelt first became president, he was in the midst of a general depression following the economic crisis that broke out in the capitalist world in 1929. Roosevelt proposed a series of "New Deal" measures to promote the connection between monopoly capital and the state.
