August 31, 1945 Robert Menzies founded the Australia Liberal Party
Eighty years ago today, on August 31, 1945 (July 24, 1945 in the lunar calendar), Robert Menzies founded the Australia Liberal Party. Sir Robert Gordon Menzies, KT, AK, CH, FRS, QC(SirRobert Gordon Menzies, December 20, 1894-May 15, 1978), an Australia politician, was the 12th and longest serving Prime Minister of Australia, serving for 18 and a half years. Sir Menzies belonged to the United Party of Australia in his early years. Later, after a difficult period, he founded the Australia Liberal Party. Since then, his career has been smooth and he has an important influence on Australia politics in the 1950s and early 1960s. In addition, whether in Parliament or election occasions, Sir Menzies is known for his eloquence. The Australia Liberal Party was founded in 1944; its predecessor was the "Australia Unity Party." At that time, Robert Menzies and his supporters broke away from the "Unionist Party" and were founded under the name "Freedom." In fact, it is equivalent to the Conservative Party in Britain and belongs to the centre-right party. The current federal leader of the Liberal Party is Malcolm Turnbull, and the deputy leader is Julie Bishop. The Liberal Party usually runs against the centre-left Australia Labor Party for power. If successful, it will traditionally form a "governing coalition" with the Australia National Party. In history, the longest-serving leader of the Liberal Party in Australia is Malcolm Fraser, who led the Liberal Party to power for 14 years; Next was John Howard, who served for eleven and a half years. Since losing the federal election in 2007, the Liberal Party has been the opposition party in the federal government; currently, among all eight state (Dominion) governments in Australia, the Liberal Party only has ruling status in Western Australia. In November 2007, the Liberal Party led by Howard lost its majority of seats in the federal election and became an opposition party, ending its 11 and a half-year ruling status. Howard personally lost his Benelong Electoral seat, which he had used for 33 years, and resigned. Brendan Nelson, former Cabinet Minister of Defense, served as the new party leader; Julie Bishop, former Cabinet Minister of Education, served as deputy leader. However, the Liberal Party's performance in subsequent polls was unsatisfactory. In addition, it was speculated that many party members had "been eyeing the leadership throne for a long time"; the new party leader Nelson finally decided to convene a party meeting in September 2008 to re-elect the leader. In the end, Malcolm Turnbull defeated Nelson 45:41 and took over the leadership position. Comment: You must have a high appeal and influence to create a party.
