Askori

Before the mid-19th century, European scholars believed that Indian Sanskrit and Proto-Indo-European were structurally consistent, and even believed that it was the language closest to Proto-Indo-European. In 1870, Askori published a paper that completely refuted this statement.

Ascoli proposed the underclass theory. He believed that the learners of a language, because they had their own mother tongue, did not speak the second language well enough, and the first language was also damaged, which formed the conditions for language evolution. For example, the Celts of the British Isles were conquered by the Anglo-Saxons, and English became the winning language. Celtic became the underclass language, but Celtic still had an influence on English. Although the conquered people adopted the new language, they retained many of the habits of the original language, and even retained the pronunciation methods and accents of the old language when using the vocabulary of the new language. He gives the example that the Latin [u] became French [y] due to the influence of the conquered Gaulish; the Latin h became f in the Iberian-occupied territories, also due to the influence of the conquered Basque language. But O. Yesperson believes that Askori's words are not well supported. Modern American scholar R. Wodor also believes that too little is known about the true nature of the submerged language, so it is difficult to determine what influence the underlying language has on the existing language.
