Picture: Eleanor Ostrom On June 12, 2012, Elinor Lin Ostrom, a professor at Indiana University and Arizona State University and the only female Nobel Prize winner in Economics (2009), passed away. When summarizing Ostrom's major achievements in his obituary that day, Indiana University President Michael McRobbie said: Her death has deprived the university of an irreplaceable treasure, and her life's creative basic research work has brought unparalleled honor to the university; Arizona State University President Michael Crow commented that "the world has lost a pioneer who thinks about social science research at a systemic level." On June 13, many media around the world also issued tributes and gave high praise. The New York Times reported that Ostrom "overturned basic economic dogma." The Los Angeles Times believes that Ostrom is famous for challenging the concept of "tragedy of the commons" in the social science community. Ostrom is the most important public economist in the world today, a well-deserved innovator in public economics (Arrow, 1997), and one of the 100 most influential people in the world (Time Magazine, 2012). Her death has caused the entire economics community to regret. News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/1lw8.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.13-06:43] 访问:74
