After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the US government has always adopted a hostile policy. However, due to the growing strength of the new China and the increasing role it plays in international life, this has forced the United States to gradually change its approach to China. In February 1972, US President Nixon visited China, which opened a new page in Sino-US relations. Nixon said: "In the past, my views were similar to those of Dulles. Now I believe that the relationship between the United States and China should change, and we must follow the trend, otherwise it will be overshadowed by the trend. Better relations between the United States and the People's Republic of China will benefit all countries. On the afternoon of February 21, Mao Zedong met with Nixon, and the two leaders exchanged views seriously and frankly on Sino-US relations and international affairs. During the visit, Premier Zhou Enlai and President Nixon, Foreign Minister Ji Pengfei and Secretary of State Rogers had extensive, serious and frank discussions on the normalization of relations between China and the United States and issues of mutual concern. After Nixon's visit to Beijing, he also visited Hangzhou and Shanghai. On February 27, the two sides reached an agreement on a joint communique in Shanghai. On February 28, the two sides issued a joint communique." In the Communiqué, the two sides stated their respective positions. They agreed unanimously to resolve relations between countries in accordance with the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. US Statement: The United States recognizes that all Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan Strait believe that there is only one China and that Taiwan is a part of China. The US government does not dispute this position. It confirms the ultimate goal of withdrawing all US armed forces and military installations from Taiwan. The two sides agreed to expand the understanding between the two peoples and enhance contacts and exchanges in science, technology, culture and sports. Nixon's visit to China and the publication of the Shanghai Communiqué opened up new prospects for Sino-US relations.
