Pulitzer statue

Joseph Pulitzer was born on April 10, 1847 in Hungary to a Jewish family. At the age of 17, he ran away from home and wanted to join the army, but was rejected due to his poor vision and weak body. He was later recruited by the U.S. Army and became a cavalry soldier. He became an American citizen in 1867. In 1868, he became a reporter for the German "Western Post". With his strong thirst for knowledge and abundant energy, he tirelessly explored various news and later became the wholly-owned operator of the newspaper. By 1878, he had mastered English proficiently and on December 9 of that year he paid $2500 for the St. Louis Telegraph. It was later merged with the local Post to form the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. In 1883, he bought the New York World for $346,000. He adopts an editorial writing system-that is, the materials collected and written by reporters are polished, sorted out, and synthesized into manuscripts for publication by the editor. This writing rule is still a universal principle in the entire news industry.

Pulitzer is unique in the operation and editing of newspapers. He stressed that newspapers should publish news truthfully and accurately, the text should be concise and popular, and the effort should be made to write good editorials.

Pulitzer died in 1911.

Nowadays, he is often honored by the Pulitzer Prize for Journalism (established in 1912), especially the Photography Prize, which represents the achievements of the American photojournalism community.
