Japan withdraws from the League of Nations over China

On February 25, 1933, the Japanese delegation withdrew from a League of Nations meeting after the League of Nations unanimously adopted a condemnation of Japan. Although this action did not amount to withdrawal from the League of Nations, it now seems likely.

The congress approved the Lytton mission's report on Manchuria, or Manchukuo, as Japan renamed it. It publicly declared that "the sovereignty of Manchuria belongs to China." The report called Manchukuo a puppet regime of Japan and stated that Japan's actions were not in self-defense and that Japanese troops on China's territory did not comply with the League of Nations agreement.

The report recommended that Japan withdraw its troops and China establish an autonomous region of Manchuria that would take care of Japan's special interests. The report also advocates that the Advisory Committee of the League of Nations should be formed by major member states such as the United States and the Soviet Union.

At the same time, Japan launched its main offensive in Jehol Province in Manchuria, capturing four cities. The attack targeted the capture of Chengde, just north of the Great Wall, about 110 miles from Beijing. Japanese representatives attending the League of Nations meeting told Sukmatsuki that the key to peace lies in the withdrawal of China troops from Jehol. He laughed at the 150,000 China soldiers stationed there and said,"One Japanese soldier is worth 10 China soldiers."
