98 years ago today, on July 7, 1927 (June 9, 1927 in the lunar calendar), Shanghai established a "special city". After the establishment of the Nanjing National Government in 1927, the National Government promulgated the "Special City Organization Law"; announced that Shanghai was established as a "special city", which was subordinate to the National Government, and appointed Huang Yan as the first mayor. This was the beginning of Shanghai's establishment and the first batch of cities in the country to establish cities. On May 20, 1930, the National Government promulgated the "Municipal Organization Law", which stipulated that "special" was abolished and all "cities" were called "cities". The "cities" were all subordinate to the Executive Yuan, so the Shanghai Special City was also renamed Shanghai City, which is still used today. The "special city" was the first time that the "city" was determined as an administrative regional unit, so the establishment of the Shanghai special city on July 7, 1927 was generally regarded as the beginning of Shanghai's establishment.
