On this day 63 years ago, on April 16, 1962 (March 12, 1962 lunar calendar), the Soviet Union created riots in Yili and Tacheng. On April 16, 1962, due to the long-term instigation and deception of the Soviet Union through the staff of its agency in Xinjiang, more than 60,000 residents of Tacheng, Yumin and Huocheng in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region fled to the Soviet Union. On May 25, the Soviet Union created the Yili riot, and the people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang, under the leadership of the Party and the People's Government, quickly crushed the counter-revolutionary armed rebellion. On April 16, 1962, riots broke out in Yili and Tacheng in Xinjiang. In the early 1960s, as the differences between the two parties became superficial, the state relations between China and the Soviet Union also appeared to crack. The Soviet Consulate in Xinjiang, China, operated in Tacheng and other places to incite Chinese border residents to flee. Since April 16, a total of 56,000 residents of Tacheng, Yumin and Huocheng counties have entered the Soviet Union one after another despite the local government's obstruction. On May 26, a group of rioters, instigated by the Soviet consulate staff, launched a riot in Yili. They attacked the organs of the Communist Party of China's Ili Autonomous Prefecture Party Committee and the State People's Committee with weapons, injured the deputy secretary of the state Party Committee, the governor and the deputy director of the Public Security Bureau, and robbed a batch of files and documents, causing vicious incidents. After the incident, the Chinese government repeatedly protested and negotiated with the Soviet Union, demanding that the Chinese border residents who were coerced to leave the country be allowed to return to China. However, the Soviet side unreasonably refused.
