Dramatist Kong Shangren

Kong Shangren (1648 - 1718), also known as Pinzhi, and also known as Ji Zhong, was known as Dongtang, and nicknamed himself Yunting Shanren. Born in Qufu, Shandong Province, he was the sixty-fourth grandson of Confucius. He was a poet and opera writer in the early Qing Dynasty.

In 1684, Kangxi returned from his southern tour to the north, and went to Qufu to worship Confucius. Kong Shangren, who was 37 years old, lectured in front of the imperial court, which was quite appreciated by Kangxi. He was awarded a doctor of the country and went to Beijing to take office. At the age of 39, he was ordered to go to Jiangnan to control water, which lasted for four years. In the 29th year of Kangxi (1690), he was transferred back to Beijing and served as a doctor of the Guozijian, the head of the Ministry of Household Affairs, and the director of the Guangdong Department of Foreign Affairs. In the thirty-eighth year of Kangxi, he wrote "Peach Blossom Fan". He was dismissed in March of the following year. This dismissal was probably due to the creation of "Peach Blossom Fan". After the dismissal, he returned to his hometown to live in seclusion.
