Trump: India proposes to cut tariffs to zero, but it's "too late"
According to a report by Reuters on September 1, US President Trump claimed on the same day that India proposed to reduce tariffs on US imports to zero. On the same day, Indian Prime Minister Modi met with Russian leaders in the face of Washington's pressure to pass tariffs.
On September 1 local time, Trump wrote in a post on his own social platform "Truth Social" that the US-India relationship is "unilateral", that is, only beneficial to India, and claimed: "They are now proposing to reduce tariffs to zero, but it is too late. They should have done it years ago."
In recent years, including during Trump's first presidential term, US-India relations have continued to warm up. However, the US government announced a 25% tariff on imports from India on July 31, which took effect on August 7. On August 6, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports on the grounds that India "imports Russian oil directly or indirectly", resulting in a cumulative tariff rate of up to 50%.
According to reports, the Indian embassy in Washington has not yet responded to Trump's claims.
