On May 19, 1895, the outstanding Cuban national hero José Martí passed away
130 years ago today, on May 19, 1895 (April 25, 1895, the lunar calendar), Cuba's outstanding national hero José Martí passed away. José Martí is Cuba's outstanding national hero, leader of the independence movement, and outstanding thinker, poet, and writer. Born on January 28, 1853 in Havana, Cuba. His father was a farmer in Spain who served in Cuba and worked as a tailor in Cuba after retiring. When Marty was a student in primary school, Principal Mendivi was a famous poet and patriot. Marty was deeply influenced by him and determined to fight for his grandfather's independence since childhood. When Marty was 16 years old, he wrote in a poem: Difficulties and obstacles, bloodshed and sacrifice, patriots, never stop fighting!... Defend the motherland, be brave and tenacious, die a worthy death, and be famous for generations. For this reason, the colonial authorities arrested him in 1869. While in prison, he wrote in his diary: "To die for the motherland is better than to live." In 1871, the colonial authorities deported Martí to Spain. He lived in Madrid and studied hard, obtaining a doctorate in philosophy, literature and law in 1874. Because the colonial authorities refused to allow him to return to Cuba, he went into exile in Mexico, Guatemala and other countries. In 1878, he was allowed to return home. In August 1879, people's uprisings broke out in two provinces in Cuba. Martí responded enthusiastically in Havana. In September, the colonial authorities arrested him again and exiled him to Spain again. For the sake of war and life, Marty chose to take journalism as his profession and served as editor-in-chief of the American Magazine. He actively wrote for many newspapers and periodicals. With his progressive ideological content and sharp writing style, he was valued by Latin American people and governments. In 1892, he founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party in New York to guide the domestic revolutionary struggle. He returned to China on April 11, 1895, joined with the insurrectionary troops and entered the battle. On May 19, the rebels fought with the Spanish colonial army in the Pingchuan area of Shuanghukou. Martin rushed in front and was unfortunately shot and died.
