On August 15, 2001 (June 26, 2001 in the lunar calendar), four historic sites including the Longmen Grottoes were awarded World Heritage certificates. On August 15, 2001, four cultural relics and relics of Longmen Grottoes, Ming and Qing royal tombs, Jokhang Temple (Potala Palace-Jokhang Temple Extension Project), and Suzhou Gardens (Canglang Pavilion, Yipu Garden, Lion Grove, Tuisi Garden) received a World Heritage Certificate issued by the UNESCO World Heritage Center. So far, the total number of world heritage sites in my country has reached 27, ranking third in the world. Since UNESCO initiated and concluded the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1972, it has 164 member states, accounting for the vast majority of United Nations member states. After China joined this Convention in 1985, all relevant work has been greatly promoted and improved. So far, it has 20 cultural heritage sites, 3 natural heritage sites, and 4 dual cultural and natural heritage sites. It has made positive contributions to the protection of global culture and natural heritage. It is one of the countries with the most remarkable achievements in world heritage work in recent years and has been widely praised at home and abroad. The four (groups) monuments that received the World Heritage Certificate were approved by the 24th World Heritage Committee to be included in the World Heritage List in Australia at the end of 2000.
