Breaking-News >> TodayHistory The Dutch bought Manhattan, New York from the Indians
Manhattan is the essence of New York City New York City is located at the Hudson River Mouth in the northeastern United States, bordering the Atlantic Ocean. It is the largest city in the United States and the Americas. The city consists of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island. It covers an area of 830 square kilometers. Manhattan Island was originally inhabited by the Indians. In 1626, the Dutch bought Manhattan Island from the Indians at a low price of $24 and set it up as a trading post near the mouth of the Hudson River, called "New Amsterdam". It was captured by the British in 1664 and renamed New York, expanding its scope to neighboring land and Long Island. It was established as a city in 1686. In 1789, it was the temporary capital of the United States (until 1796), and the first president, Washington, took office here. In 1825, the Erie Canal was opened, and New York had a year-round navigable waterway from the five tidal areas. It connected the economic ties between the Midwest of the United States and the Atlantic coast, making New York at an important junction point for domestic and foreign trade. With the construction of the "New York Central Railway" and several railways and highways, the economy became increasingly prosperous, and New York became a cosmopolitan city and port.
