The Algonquian Indians were the earliest inhabitants of this place. John Cabot, an Italian captain hired by the British from 1497 to 1499, sailed along the coast. In the 16th century, Portuguese, Spanish, French and English explorers came to explore islands, harbours and rivers. The French named a hill they occupied after their country's then province of Maine, and later called the place "Maine". From 1615 to 1763, it became a battlefield of competition between the British, Indians and French. In 1691, it became part of Massachusetts. In the early 17th century, colonists established fishing villages on the coastal islands and began trading furs with the Indians. In 1763, the British defeated the French in eastern Canada, and the area was also owned by the British. After the end of the American Revolution, the Maines strived for their own state. In 1820, they seceded from Massachusetts to form Maine and declared it the 23rd state of the United States. Most of the remaining 2,200 Indians now live on reservations.
