The academician often waved to people with a smile on his side and said "hello". Deng Qidong was born in 1938 in Shuangfeng, Hunan Province. In the mid-1950s, Deng Qidong was a middle school student in Changsha, Hunan Province. One day, a geography teacher wearing glasses drew a few figures on the blackboard with chalk to introduce the causes of folds and fractures, and Deng Qidong, who was interested in nature, was immediately attracted. After three years of geography extracurricular group activities in high school, in 1956, Deng Qidong applied for the geology major of the Zhongnan Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and became attached to geology. Several years of study soon passed. In 1961, Deng Qidong was assigned to the Institute of Geology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and studied scientific research under the leadership of geologist Professor Zhang Wenyou. At that time, the whole family was happy for him, and now there is a special family photo taken at home that year, which says "Send East to Beijing". Deng Qidong is a "straight-A student", with quick thinking and unforgettable memories, and always comes first in exams. When her daughter Deng Haihong was studying, she encountered difficulties in her studies and asked her father suspiciously, "Why is it so difficult to study? Tell me what to do?" In the eyes of geologists, Deng Qidong is "one of the main leaders in China's contemporary seismic geology and active tectonics research." The current level of seismic geology and active tectonics research in our country can stand on the same line as foreigners, which is related to Deng Qidong's guiding role. It is an old man's persistence for decades to keep China's seismic geology research on par with foreign countries. "When I was a child, I basically didn't see my dad very much. "In the 1970s, a family of five - a couple, two children, and an elderly man - were crammed into a small 17-square-meter room. In addition to a bed and books, there was only a small table that doubled as reading and eating. After the establishment of the State Seismological Administration in 1970, it was decided to compile a national seismic intensity zoning map. At that time, Deng Qidong was appointed as the team leader to lead the work. The biggest difficulty at that time was that during the "Cultural Revolution", earthquake data across the country was not systematic and scattered; field surveys often encountered obstacles from various factions. Under such conditions, Deng Qidong led his colleagues to determine a set of earthquake zoning methods suitable for China. In 1977, they succeeded. The state officially approved this map as a must-have map for earthquake engineering and economic construction applications across the country, and a year later it was awarded the National Science and Technology Progress Award by the National Science and Technology Conference. Apologizing to the elderly in the Wenchuan earthquake area is too much honor for an 80-year-old academician. Honor is added, but there are still regrets. As seismologists, the occurrence of major earthquakes always provokes their most sensitive nerves - Haicheng, Tangshan, Wenchuan, these three places are the three most unforgettable nodes in the history of earthquakes in New China. The Wenchuan earthquake did not follow the laws recognized by the academic community, and there were no precursors recognized by the academic community. Shortly after the earthquake, Deng Qidong had just returned from Canada, and he rushed to the earthquake area without bothering to rest. An Yanfen, an accompanying student, recalled that Beichuan had been blocked at that time, and the scene was "huge impact". In January 1997, he was diagnosed with kidney cancer and his left kidney was removed. In June this year, he was diagnosed with urinary tract epithelial cancer and has been hospitalized. Until this year, the 80-year-old man went to work on time every day and often worked overtime on Saturdays and Sundays. "His body is exhausted by work. Deng Qidong also likes literature, and he once told his daughter that if he did not do geological research, he must be an excellent writer. The only thing this busy old man has to do with literature is to read Jin Yong's novels. His student Yang Xiaoping said that his teacher was fascinated by Jin Yong's novels for a while and discussed with him who the characters in the novels were more powerful. However, although the family bought a complete set of Jin Yong's novels, for so many years, Deng Qidong only finished reading "Yitian Dragon Slayer". When he was young, he was too busy to have time; when he was old, he no longer had energy in the hospital bed. On the day Jin Yong died, Deng Qidong heard the news in the hospital.
