On May 4, 1989, the first "Top Ten Outstanding Young Persons in China" selection event was announced in Beijing (since 1990, it was changed to the selection of "Top Ten Outstanding Young Persons in China"). The selection event was jointly sponsored by the All-China Youth Federation, China Youth Development Foundation and ten major news organizations in the capital.
