On March 16, 2004, Liu Jun, amateur seventh stage of Go, amateur world champion, and a legendary figure in the Go world in China died suddenly in the bathroom of his home in Shanghai. The cause of death was suspected to be gas poisoning or a heart attack. He was only 29 years old. Liu Jun was born in June 1975, amateur level 7. He is one of the top amateur masters in Shanghai and even the country. After withdrawing from the national training team due to being diagnosed with heart disease, Liu Jun began his new career in the amateur chess world. He won two Evening News Cup championships in 1996 and 1997, won the World Amateur Championships in 1996 and 1997, won the 4th China Newcomer King championship, won the top 32 of the first Samsung Fire Cup, and won the 15th Yellow River Cup in 2002.
