On this day, 31 years ago, September 29, 1994 (August 24, 1994 in the lunar calendar), the Security Council decided to lift sanctions against Haiti. On the evening of September 29, 1994, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 944, deciding to lift the sanctions against Haiti in previous Security Council resolutions starting the day after President Aristide returned to Haiti. The resolution was adopted with 13 votes in favor, with 2 abstentions, with Russia and Brazil abstaining.
