On this day, 31 years ago, September 29, 1994 (August 24, 1994 in the lunar calendar), the Security Council decided to lift sanctions against Haiti. On the evening of September 29, 1994, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 944, deciding to lift the sanctions against Haiti in previous Security Council resolutions starting the day after President Aristide returned to Haiti. The resolution was adopted with 13 votes in favor, with 2 abstentions, with Russia and Brazil abstaining. The resolution once again demands that the Haiti military authorities step down as soon as possible and restore the legitimate Haiti government, and stated that the United Nations Mission in Haiti will be deployed after the US-led multinational force completes its mission. Ambassador Wang Xuexian, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, made a speech after the vote. He said that the China delegation has been following the development of the situation in Haiti and is deeply concerned about the suffering caused by economic sanctions to the Haiti people. He expressed his welcome and support for the Security Council resolution.
