On September 14, 2000 (August 17, 2000 lunar calendar), the Asia-Europe submarine cable was fully opened. Asia-Europe submarine cable On September 14, 2000, with the opening of the Shanghai landing station of the Asia-Europe submarine cable, China Telecom group company participated in the construction of the Asia-Europe submarine cable system connecting 33 countries and regions in Asia and Europe. After more than three years of construction, it was officially opened. Its completion marks a new step in China's international communication level. The Asia-Europe submarine cable system starts from the United Kingdom in the west, connects France, Italy and other countries through the Mediterranean Sea, enters the Indian Ocean through the Red Sea to Singapore, and then heads east, reaches China through Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, and finally reaches Japan and South Korea. It has a total length of about 38,000 kilometers and connects 33 countries and regions, with a total of 39 landing stations. The Asia-Europe submarine cable system adopts optical amplification technology and wavelength division multiplexing technology, with a total transmission capacity of 20Gb/s. The system is invested by 93 telecommunications companies, with a total investment of 1.50 billion US dollars. China Telecom invested a total of 39 million US dollars, accounting for 2.6% of the total investment. The circuit is allocated according to the capacity of each investor and the distance of the relevant trunk lines. The Asia-Europe submarine cable system has one landing station each in Shanghai and Shantou, China. On January 15, 1997, representatives of more than 70 telecommunications companies and departments in the world jointly signed the Asia-Europe submarine cable construction and maintenance agreement in Singapore. Since the optical cable system has Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. to participate and land in Taiwan, at the same time, it will play an important role in enhancing cross-strait exchanges and developing cross-strait communication services. Zhang Jiping, deputy general manager of China Telecom group company, said at a press conference in Beijing today that at present, the bandwidth occupied by international telecommunications lines, voice only accounts for half, while data communication such as the Internet accounts for half, and it is growing rapidly. In order to meet China's growing international communication business needs, China has not only played the role of initiator and participant in the construction of Asia-Europe submarine optical cable, but also participated in the construction of nearly 20 international optical cables such as China-Japan, China-South Korea, China-US, Global Submarine Cable and Asia-Pacific No. 2 Optical Cable, with a total investment of 2.20 billion yuan, which has effectively promoted the improvement of China's status in the international communication industry.
