On November 11, 1987, the first and second phases of the Beijing Section of the Beijing-Shijiazhuang Highway, a fully overpass and fully enclosed expressway, were officially opened today. Vice Premier Tian Jiyun of the State Council cut the color for the opening of this section of highway. The Beijing-Shijiazhuang Highway is a national-level arterial road leading from Beijing to Guangzhou and Shenzhen via Shijiazhuang. It is an important trunk highway in southwest Beijing. The section of the highway opened today starts from Liuliqiao on the Third Ring Road in the east and ends at Zhaoxindian in the west. It has a total length of 14.04 kilometers and a width of 26.5 meters. Overpasses of different styles have been built at all intersections along the line. The first and second phases of the Beijing section of the Beijing-Shijiazhuang Highway are designed to be 80 to 100 kilometers per hour and have a daily traffic volume of about 50,000 vehicles. Previously, this section of the road was only 9 meters wide and it took an hour for round-trip vehicles to pass through. Now it only takes ten minutes.
