Seventy-nine years ago today, on June 19, 1946 (May 20, 1946), the United States asked the United Nations to control the atomic bomb. On June 19, 1946, the American statesman Bernard Baruch urged the United Nations to make a choice between "world peace or world destruction" in a speech at the United Nations. The United States proposed that as long as the United Nations exercises control over the development of the atomic bomb and restricts the use of atomic bomb research for peaceful purposes, the United States will disclose all atomic bomb-related secrets and destroy its existing nuclear weapons. As an additional condition, the United States also proposed that no country should exercise veto power in this matter. The Soviet Union responded to this proposal of the United States today. They also advocated a ban on the use and stockpiling of atomic bombs, but retained the veto power of a great power in the development of atomic energy research. Both sides believed that if the development of nuclear weapons was not controlled, the arms race would escalate.
