On this day 143 years ago, November 20, 1882 (October 10, 1882), the American astronomer Henry Draper died. Henry Draper (March 7, 1837 - November 20, 1882), American physician, astronomer, and pioneer of astrophotography. Henry Draper's father was a physician, chemist, botanist, professor at New York University, and the first person to photograph the moon with a telescope in the winter of 1839-1940 [1]. In 1857, at the age of 20, Henry Draper graduated from the New York University School of Medicine [1], became a doctor, and in 1859 became the dean of the New York University School of Medicine. In 1867 Draper married, and his wife was a wealthy socialite. Henry Draper was one of the pioneers of astrophotography. He visited Europe as a young man and returned home to establish the first observatory in the United States dedicated to astrophotography, and built his own reflecting telescope. In 1863, he took many high-quality pictures of the moon. In August 1872 he captured the spectrum of Vega, the first photograph of the spectrum of a star taken by humans. In 1874, he organized an expedition to photograph the transit of Venus, which was awarded a medal by the United States Congress. On September 30, 1880, Draper used an 11-inch refractor telescope made by the Clark Brothers to expose for 50 minutes and took the first picture of the Orion Nebula [1]. In addition to this, he also photographed the spectra of Jupiter, Mars, Venus, and many other bright stars. After Drebber died of pneumonia in 1882 at the age of 45, his widow Anna Mary Palmer established the Henry Drebber Prize for outstanding contributions to astronomy. She also funded the compilation of the Henry Drebber Catalog of the spectra of stars by Pickering, Cannon and others at the Harvard Observatory.
