On this day, 38 years ago, September 8, 1987 (July 16, 1987 in the lunar calendar), literary translator Cao Jinghua passed away. Cao Jinghua, formerly known as Cao Lianya, was born on August 11, 1897 in Lushi County, Henan Province. In his youth, he actively participated in the progressive student movement. In 1920, he joined the Socialist Youth League and was sent to study at Oriental University in Moscow. He returned to China in 1922. In 1925, he was dispatched by Comrade Li Dazhao to Kaifeng to serve as an interpreter of the Soviet Advisory Group of the Second Army of the National Revolutionary Army. After the failure of the Great Revolution, he went to the Soviet Union again and taught at Sun Yat-sen University in Moscow, Leningrad Oriental Language Institute and other schools, and returned to China in the autumn of 1933. Later, under the direct guidance of Comrade Zhou Enlai, he participated in the work of the Sino-Soviet Cultural Association and the All-China Anti-Enemy Association of Literary and Art Circles, and edited the "Soviet War of Resistance Literature and Art Company". Since the early 1920s, Cao Jinghua has been engaged in the introduction of progressive Russian literature and Soviet literature, and has forged a profound friendship with Lu Xun and Qu Qiubai. As a pioneer in translating and introducing Soviet revolutionary literature in my country, he worked hard for decades to translate nearly 30 works such as "Iron Flow","Defending Chalijin","I am the Son of the Working People", and "Rainbow"., about 3 million words. He was once praised by Mr. Lu Xun as: "Without a sound, he constantly translates." After the founding of New China, Cao Jinghua served as a professor at Peking University and director of the Department of Russian Language and Literature. In addition to his heavy teaching and scientific research work, he also served as an alternate representative of the literary and art circles to attend the first plenary session of the China People's Political Consultative Conference, a representative of the First, Second and Third National People's Congresses, and a member of the Fifth and Sixth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Secretary of the Secretariat of the China Writers Association, Editor of World Literature, etc. He has visited abroad many times and received foreign delegations, making great efforts to promote and develop cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries. In May 1987, Leningrad University in the Soviet Union awarded him an honorary doctorate. In August of the same year, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union awarded him the Medal of Friendship among the People of All Countries. Since the 1960s, Cao Jinghua has written many excellent prose. These articles are highly ideological and have strong artistic appeal, and are deeply loved by readers. Cao Jinghua linked his life to the destiny of the country and people and joined the Communist Party of China in 1956. He is loyal to the cause of the party. Comrade Dong Biwu once praised his noble sentiments and character with the poem "Clean than daffodils, darker than chrysanthemum, plum fragrance secretly moves and strengthens the bones."
