On this day, 26 years ago, on October 9, 1999 (September 1, 1999, the lunar calendar), a conference commemorating the 2550th anniversary of the birth of Confucius was held. On October 9, 1999, Li Ruihuan, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, met with Chinese and foreign experts and scholars who came to attend the "Conference to Commemorate the 2550th Anniversary of the Birth of Confucius and the Second General Conference of the International Confucian Union." Li Ruihuan said that Confucius was a great thinker and educator in ancient China. The Confucian theory he created was extensive and profound, including thoughts and propositions in politics, economy, philosophy, ethics, education, art, etc., and formed the foundation of the traditional culture of the Chinese nation. It played an irreplaceable role in the formation, reproduction, unification, stability and self-reliance of the Chinese nation in the world's nations, and made extremely significant contributions to the progress and development of human civilization. It has far-reaching influence that transcends the times and transcends national borders. Many important works of Confucianism, especially the wise words on being a person, doing things, and building a country, are still widely quoted by people. Li Ruihuan pointed out that currently, human society is at the turn of the century and is facing many contradictions and problems. To solve these problems, we must first rely on the wisdom and wisdom of contemporary people, but we can also find wisdom from ancient philosophers. More than 2,000 years of history have fully proved that Confucianism can provide useful inspiration for us to solve the problems facing human society. We must adopt a scientific attitude and use scientific methods to dig, sort out, summarize and study Confucianism, select its essence and eliminate its dross, and neither adhere to the old ways, copy it, nor forget its ancestors or completely deny it. It is necessary to give it new meaning in light of the new era, and make it organically penetrate into all aspects of politics, economy, culture and social life, better serve reality, and truly make the past serve the present. Li Ruihuan said that as China is the birthplace of Confucianism, we are both proud and responsible. We should do more work for Confucian research. He paid tribute to the enthusiasm of Chinese and foreign scholars in studying Confucianism and fully affirmed the results achieved in the research. He hoped that everyone would work together to strengthen exchanges and raise Confucianism research to a new level.
