September 3, 1936: Agreement on Non-Intervention in the Spanish Civil War signed
On this day, 89 years ago, September 3, 1936 (July 18, 1936, the Agreement on Non-Interference in the Spanish Civil War was signed. In the summer of 1936, a civil war broke out in Spain between the Popular Front government composed of leftist parties and the fascist armed rebellion led by Franco. Fascists in Germany and Italy supported the rebels and intervened armed in Spain. They dispatched a large number of aircraft to transport rebels and weapons and ammunition, and sent troops and warships to Spain to attack the government of the Republic together with the rebels. Britain and France adopted a "non-interference" policy towards fascist aggression. On September 3, 1936, at the initiative of France and Britain, 27 European countries signed an agreement on "non-interference" in the Spanish Civil War, prohibiting the export of weapons to Spain and the transit of weapons purchased by Spain. A few days later, a "Non-Intervention Committee" was established in London to oversee the implementation of the agreement. The non-interference agreement prevented the Spanish Republic from acquiring arms and the support of peoples for Spain's national revolutionary war against fascist aggression.
