57 years ago today, August 8, 1968 (July 15, 1968 in the lunar calendar), a heart transplant operation in Japan caused shock. In the history of scientific development in Japan, the important news that cannot be missed is heart transplant surgery. Those who achieved this initiative were Dr. Tian Shoulang (49 years old), chief professor of the Department of Thoracic, Cardiac, and Cardiovascular Surgery at the Affiliated Hospital of Sapporo Medical University in Hokkaido. With the intention of giving it a try, he performed this operation on patient Nobuo Miyazaki (18 years old). Nobu suffered from heart valve disease and was exempted from physical education classes when he was a student. After 1964, his condition worsened and he was completely bedridden. On April 5, 1968, he came to the Affiliated Hospital of Sapporo Medical University and was hospitalized. Because he suffers from multiple diseases such as mitral valve insufficiency, tricuspid valve insufficiency, and aortic valve stenosis, the heart is abnormally hypertrophy. Dr. Wada personally performed the knife at 2:5 a.m. on August 8, 1968, with the assistance of a team of 20 doctors, and started the heart transplant operation. It only took 13 minutes to open the chest cavity and remove the enlarged heart. It took another 45 minutes to successfully transplant the healthy heart. The person who provided the healthy heart was a fourth-year student (21-year-old) from a Tokyo university living in Sapporo. He drowned in a suspended animation state after swimming on August 7. He was once awakened after artificial respiration, but was immediately confirmed dead. Nobuo felt good after undergoing a heart transplant and lived for another 83 days. He died on the afternoon of October 29. Regarding the cause of his death, Dr. Wada said: "There was no rejection reaction, just because he had suffered from serum hepatitis, his body was weak, and he was complicated by tracheitis." Chien Shinhara and Seiji Kimoto, the authoritative cardiac surgery authorities, also said: "Death from systemic decline cannot be regarded as a failure of the heart transplant. The successful heart transplant is a huge progress in medical development and is of great significance in the history of world medicine." However, on the other hand, some people have raised objections on the grounds of "ignoring rejection reactions and conducting human experiments." Although the Sapporo District Procuratorate filed a complaint against Hotan, the Supreme Procuratorate announced on September 1, 1970 that it would not pursue the case.
