Zhang Boling (1876-1951), named Shouchun, with characters, Han nationality, was born in Tianjin on April 5, 1876. In 1892, he entered the Beiyang Navy Academy to study. After holding the ideal of "education to save the country", he devoted his life to education. Graduated from the Beiyang Navy Academy, and later apprenticed on a naval ship. After the Sino-Japanese War, he advocated education to save the country. In 1898, he taught Western learning in the home hall set up by Yan Xiu Institute. In 1904, he founded Jingye Middle School with Yan Xiu and others (moved to Tianjin Nankai University in 1907 and later renamed Nankai University School). He studied in the United States in 1917. In 1919, he and Yan Xiu organized the university department of Nankai University School and established Nankai University. In 1923 and 1928, he founded Nankai University Women's Central School and Nankai University Primary School. He formulated the school motto of "fair and fair performance", promoted science and valued sports. In 1936, he established Nanyu Middle School in Chongqing (renamed Chongqing Nankai University Middle School in 1938). In 1938, he served as a member of the Standing Committee of the School Council of Southwest United University. In the same year, he joined the Chinese Kuomintang and served as the Vice Speaker of the National Council and the Central Supervisory Committee. In 1946, he participated in the organization of the Sino-American Cultural Association and the Association for the Promotion of Civil Governance. In 1948, he served as the dean of the Kuomintang Government Examination Institute and soon resigned. He arrived in Beijing in 1950 and later died of illness.
