On this day, 28 years ago, May 25, 1997 (April 19, 1997, the Lunar Calendar), the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons was officially established. On May 25, 1997, with the conclusion of the first session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons at the Hague Conference Center in the Netherlands on the 24th, the "Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons" was officially established. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is composed of three main bodies: the Conference of States Parties, the Executive Council and the Technical Secretariat. It is headquartered in The Hague. During this three-week Conference of the States Parties, representatives of the 88 States Parties that have ratified the Chemical Weapons Convention elected the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, composed of 41 member states. Representatives from 165 signatories to the Chemical Weapons Convention and relevant international organizations and non-governmental organizations attended the conference. The Chemical Weapons Convention is the first disarmament agreement negotiated within a multilateral framework aimed at eliminating weapons of mass destruction under universal international control.
