On this day, 31 years ago, on October 14, 1994 (September 10, 1994 in the lunar calendar), Nobel Prize winner Mahafouz was assassinated and injured. At about 5 p.m. on October 14, 1994, the beautiful streets along the Nile River in the Aguz district of Cairo were calm and orderly, and everything seemed as normal as before. Najib Mahfouz, Egypt's most famous writer today, winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize for Literature, and known as the father of Arab novels, left his luxurious residence at No. 172 and headed for a red Fiat sedan parked on the roadside waiting for him. This day was Friday, the day when he usually went to the Nile Palace Entertainment Center to host a symposium on "Mahafouz Literature". Such symposiums have been held every Friday for 30 years. At the symposium, Mahfouz will meet with friends in the literary world and introduce his works, creative thoughts and experience to his students and a wide range of literary enthusiasts... In recent years, Mahafouz, who is over 80 years old, has basically stopped attending public activities due to his old age and frail health, and has also declined many interview requests, but he still insists on attending this symposium every Friday. On this day, Mahfouz's good friend and veterinarian Hashim drove him. At 5:15, when Mahfouz got into the car and took his seat and Hashem was about to start the car, suddenly, a thin, dark-skinned young man with short hair in a blue and white shirt and gray trousers approached Mahfouz. At the door of the car, Mahfouz thought he wanted to shake hands with him, so he took the initiative to reach out from the inside of the car. At this moment, the young man held a hidden folding knife and quickly stabbed the unsuspecting Mahassez's neck. Then he immediately turned around and rushed to a running brown "Mercedes-Benz" parked next to him, and fled with the two accomplices who were picking him up in the car. The entire process took less than a minute. At this time, Mahafouz's neck was full of blood, and the knife abandoned by the murderer was still embedded in his flesh. The surroundings were in chaos, and cries for help were loud. Fortunately, his good friend Hashem was not in danger. He made a decisive decision and immediately turned the car around and quickly sent Mahafouz to the Egyptian Police Hospital just a few meters away. After diagnosis, Mahafouz's right carotid artery was stabbed, and the hospital's operating room immediately put into surgical treatment of Mahafouz. After hearing the news, some people spontaneously rushed to donate blood to Mahafouz. After three hours of surgery and nearly seven hours of other rescue treatment, the hospital announced in the early morning of the 15th that Mahafouz had passed the critical period and was currently in stable condition. Mahfouz was born in December 1911. Since publishing his first novel in 1932, he has written nearly 50 novels, more than 30 dramas and movie scripts over the past 60 years. His masterpieces-"Palace Street","Si Gong" and "Ganlu Street"-describe the kaleidoscopic history of the Cairo family from the 1920s to the 1950s in an autobiographical form. They have been translated into Chinese, English, French, German, Russian and other languages, and are widely circulated around the world. In recent years, despite Mahafouz's advanced age and illness, he has continued to cultivate. After the incident, no individual or organization claimed responsibility for the assassination, and the murderer has not yet been captured. However, public opinion here generally speculated that this was the work of fundamentalist extremist terrorists. As we all know, Mahfouz opposes Islamic extremists, and some of his novels severely lashes them. To this end, Mahafouz has been intimidated many times by some lawless elements. The Egyptian security department once provided him with private guards. But he didn't want it. After the assassination of Mahfouz, Egyptian President Mubarak sent a special person to the hospital to express condolences. The Minister of Interior, Health, Culture, and Governor of Cairo Province also visited him.
