On this day 125 years ago, on August 10, 1900 (July 16, 1900 in the lunar calendar), Chinese linguist Wang Li was born. Wang Li (1900-1986), a Bobai native of Guangxi, was a famous linguist and one of the founders of modern Chinese linguistics. He dropped out of school in his early years and studied at home. In 1924, he went to Shanghai to study. In 1926, he was admitted to the Tsinghua Institute of Sinology. He studied in France under Liang Qichao and Zhao Yuanren. In 1927, he returned to China after receiving a doctorate in literature from the University of Paris. He successively served as a professor at Tsinghua University, Southwest United University, Lingnan University, Sun Yat-sen University, Peking University and other schools. He also served as a member of the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a member and deputy director of the Chinese Literature Reform Committee, an honorary president of the Chinese Linguistics Association, a member of the fourth, fifth and sixth sessions of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and a member of the fifth and sixth standing committees. Mr. Wang Li has been engaged in Chinese linguistics research for more than half a century. He has published more than 40 monographs and more than 200 papers in Chinese grammar, phonology, lexic His wide range of research fields, great achievements, and far-reaching influence at home and abroad are extremely prominent among Chinese linguists. During his teaching career of more than half a century, he has cultivated a batch of linguistics professionals and made important contributions to the development of Chinese linguistics. During his study in France, Mr. Wang Li translated and published more than 20 kinds of French novels and plays; during the Anti-Japanese War, he wrote a large number of essays, and was known as one of the three masters of prose for scholars during the war. During his academic career of more than 50 years, Wang Li wrote academic treatises of tens of millions of words, including more than 40 monographs and more than 200 papers.
