On this day, 42 years ago, on October 29, 1983 (September 24, 1983 in the lunar calendar), people in the Netherlands and other countries demonstrated against the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union. On October 29, 1983, many people from the Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal, Denmark and other countries took to the streets and held demonstrations, demanding peace, opposing the arms race, and opposing the deployment of new nuclear missiles in Europe. The Hague held the largest demonstration in Dutch history. About 500,000 people participated in demonstrations against the deployment of U.S. cruise missiles in Europe and the new nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union. Tens of thousands of people participated in peaceful demonstrations in major cities such as Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, and Porto. About 1500 people participated in the demonstration in St. Gallen and Zurich, Switzerland. Nearly 200,000 people across Denmark participated in demonstrations.
