Xiaolin Bai, a 20-month-old boy, lives in Hopewell, near Princeton, New Jersey. He was taken from his bed on the evening of the 1st, while his father, the famous transatlantic pilot, and his mother, Mrs. Lindbergh, were having dinner. The police found muddy footprints in the nursery and a homemade ladder outside the window, along which the child was taken away. A note was posted on the windowsill asking for $50,000 to redeem the child. Colonel Lindbergh expressed his willingness to pay the ransom. However, the note did not state where or how the payment would be made. News of the kidnapping shocked the country, and President Hoover ordered all federal law enforcement agencies to assist in the search. With the help of many volunteers, more than 100,000 military police searched the entire East Coast, intercepting vehicles, interrogating passengers and assisting Colonel Lindberg in conducting a thorough search of the jungle around his home. On May 12, the body of Lin Bai's youngest son was found decomposed on a path in Lanshan District, less than 5 miles from home. A doctor who examined the body said the baby was apparently brutally killed shortly after the abduction. On September 20, 1934, Bruno Hauptman was arrested. He was accused of kidnapping and killing Lindberg's baby in March 1932. The main confirmation was that the ransom was found in Hauptman's property. He was convicted of premeditated murder. The death penalty was carried out on April 3, 1936.
