On June 30, 1906, the United States enacted the Food and Drug Purity Act
On this day 119 years ago, on June 30, 1906 (May 9, 1906 in the lunar calendar), the United States enacted the Ensuring the Purity of Food and Drugs Act. On June 30, 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt of the United States approved a bill to guarantee the purity of food and medicines used by Americans. This was the second severe restriction on adulterated goods in 1906. This new law would take effect on January 1, 1907. It stipulated: False trademarks on goods are prohibited, and the manufacture and transportation of adulterated food and medicines within the United States is prohibited. In May, at the urging of the President, Congress passed legislation requiring that all meat products intended for human consumption be inspected before being packaged and shipped. Roosevelt first became interested in meat after reading Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle," which exposed the squalor of Chicago's packing plants. Sinclair described slaughtering sick animals at the slaughterhouse, dirty workers at the plant, and rats running around the factory. At first the president was skeptical of the author's description. He later conferred with Sinclair, and after finally being convinced that the book's description was true, the president urged the establishment of a meat inspection law. Under the newly passed food and drug purity statute, offenders found to have used counterfeit trademarks or adulterated food or medicine would be fined $500 or one year in prison, or both. The food covered by this regulation includes all foods, beverages, and condiments consumed by humans and livestock.
