On March 12, 1979, our country resumed Arbor Day
On this day 46 years ago, on March 12, 1979 (February 14, 1979 lunar calendar), our country resumed the Tree Planting Day. On February 23, 1979, at the sixth meeting of the Standing Committee of the Fifth National People's Congress, in accordance with the proposal of the State Council, in order to mobilize the people of all ethnic groups in the country to plant trees and speed up the greening of the motherland, it was decided that March 12 every year would be the National Tree Planting Day. On the initiative of Comrade Deng Xiaoping, the Fourth Session of the Fifth National People's Congress deliberated and adopted the Resolution on Launching the National People's Compulsory Tree Planting Campaign in December 1981. The working people of our country have had the custom of planting trees around the Qingming Festival since ancient times. There are records of rewarding tree planting as far back as the Spring and Autumn Period. Our country officially stipulated that the Tree Planting Day was in 1915. In April 1928, the whole country was ordered to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen's death, that is, March 12, as Tree Planting Day. On Tree Planting Day in 1982, Comrade Deng Xiaoping took the lead and planted the first tree of the voluntary tree planting movement on Yuquan Mountain in Beijing.
