February 2, 1848 The Japan-Mexico War ended
177 years ago today, on February 2, 1848 (December 28, 1847 lunar calendar), the Mexican-American War ended. In September 1847, Scott, the commander of the US Army, led the US troops into Mexico City. The Mexican-American War (1846-1848) In 1835, the US instigated a rebellion among planters in the Texas area of Mexico and merged with the United States. Mexico sent troops to suppress it, the US sent troops to occupy Texas and invade Mexico. In May 1846, the US declared war on Mexico. On May 18, 1846, Taylor led the US troops south to capture Matamos, Monterrey in September, and Saltillo in November. In June of the same year, Carney led 1,700 US troops westward, capturing Mexico and California. On September 14, 1847, the US army invaded Mexico City, and on the 16th, the whole city was under martial law. Mexican President San Ana was removed from office. On November 11, 1847, Entente was elected interim president of Mexico, and peace talks began in January 1848. On February 2, the two sides signed a peace treaty, and Mexico ceded Texas, New Mexico, and Alto California. On June 12, 1848, the US military withdrew from Mexico City and the war ended. Through this not-so-large war, the United States captured 2.30 million square kilometers of land and became a major power across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, a rare event in the world. Mexico lost most of its territory and was devastated. From then on, the United States gained dominance in the Americas.
