On this day 297 years ago, on February 21, 1728 (January 12, 1728 lunar calendar), Peter III Feodorovich, Emperor of the Russian Empire, was born. Peter III Feodorovich (formerly Karl Peter Ulrich, reigned 1728-1762, 1761-1762), Emperor of the Russian Empire, son of Karl Frederick and Anna Petrovna of Holstein Godorp, grandson of Peter the Great. Peter III was originally German and could hardly speak Russian. Peter III was chosen as the heir to the Russian throne in 1744 because Empress Elizabeth Petrovna was unmarried and childless. After Peter III's accession to the throne, it was the beginning of the Holstein-Godorp-Romanov dynasty. Because of his martial arts of Frederick the Great, he admired Frederick the Great. As soon as he ascended the throne, he stopped the Seven Years' War in Russia's favor and formed an offensive and defensive alliance with King Frederick of Prussia. Peter III not only did not attack Prussia, but instead ordered General Chernishev, who had captured Berlin the year before, to lead 20,000 Russian army to assist Prussia and fight against Austria under Frederick. Peter himself even expressed his desire to fight under Frederick. Russian Empress Catherine II Peter III announced that she would be relieved of the service obligations of the nobles and stop the persecution of non-state believers. However, due to the confiscation of monastic territories and the forced Prussification of the army, the interests of the Holstein family of his own origin were placed above the interests of the Russian state, which aroused the resentment of the Russian monk class, nobles and soldiers. On June 28, 1762, Peter III was deposed by his wife Catherine (Catherine II) in a palace coup. At the end of October, the deposed Tsar Peter III was poisoned (or strangled), and Catherine claimed to have died of indigestion.
