On July 20, 1982 (May 30 of the lunar calendar), artificial insemination of frozen semen was successfully used in our country to breed giant pandas.

On July 20, 1980, our country was successful in artificial insemination of giant pandas with frozen semen. Giant pandas are rare animals in the world and are only produced in our country, known as "living fossils". The fertility of giant pandas is low. Under the conditions of captivity, the possibility of male and female breeding of giant pandas is extremely small. During the 50 years from 1936 to 1986, more than 200 giant pandas were captive in the world zoo. Among them, less than 10 males have the ability to mate; less than 30% of females have the ability to produce offspring; only one-third of the offspring born by female pregnancy live to be over the age of one. Giant pandas have become rare and endangered animals. In order to rescue giant pandas that are in danger of extinction, scientific and technological workers have stepped up research on artificial insemination technology of giant pandas to increase the chance of pregnancy of giant pandas. In 1978, Beijing Zoo successfully used artificial insemination for the first time. This is the world's first record of successful artificial insemination of giant pandas. In 1980, Chengdu Zoo used frozen semen for artificial insemination and achieved another success. From 1963 to 1988, China's artificial insemination zoos successfully reproduced giant pandas in Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Chongqing, Fuzhou, Hangzhou, Kunming and Xi'an. In addition, there were 9 places in Wolong Nature Reserve, with a total of 55 pregnancies, a total of 87 offspring, and 28 surviving, effectively continuing this rare species.
