On January 31, 1906, feminists were willing to use violence to gain political participation
On this day, 119 years ago, on January 31, 1906 (January 7, 1906), feminists resorted to violence to gain political suffrage. Fighting Women in the Streets On January 31, 1906, a group of British women said they had waited impatiently and demanded the right to vote, willing to go to jail to win the struggle. Emmeline Pankhurst, the leader of the Fighting Women's Social and Political Union, declared that women might have to resort to violence and risk arrest in order to achieve their goals. In France, women in the suffragette movement demanded a reduction in taxes, depriving MPs and generals who opposed women's participation in elections of state salaries. Several states in the United States have given women the right to vote. On February 13, 1907, a group of women demanding political participation stormed Parliament, but their well-organized attack was repelled by the police. About 60 women were arrested. Many were injured in fierce fights with mounted police. The demonstration began after noon and lasted until 10 p.m. On the evening of the 13th, after a rally, the women tried to storm Parliament again, but police on horseback and on foot resisted every attack from the women. Several of the women complained of police brutality in London. To draw more attention to the issue of women's participation in politics, more than 100 of the women's rights movement vowed to get themselves arrested. Anne Kenny, one of the leaders of the women's rights movement, had promised to lead 1,000 women into the House of Representatives if British women were still denied the right to vote by the end of the conference. Women demanding political participation flooded the streets of London
