Our country's famous playwright Chen Baichen died of illness in Nanjing in the early morning of May 28, 1994. He was 86 years old. Chen Baichen was born in Huaiyin City, Jiangsu Province in 1908 and began to engage in literary and artistic creation and drama education in the 1920s. After liberation, he successively served as secretary-general of China Writers Association, vice chairman of China Drama Association, deputy editor-in-chief of People's Literature, and honorary chairman of the Jiangsu Province Federation of Literary and Art Circles and Writers Association. After 1978, he was employed as a professor and director of the Chinese Department of Nanjing University, and presided over the establishment of the Theater Film and Television Research Institute. This was the first doctoral program in drama in China and cultivated many theater people. In his 70-year literary career, Chen Baichen has created a large number of excellent dramas, films, novels, and prose, especially making unique contributions to satirical comedies and historical dramas. Among them,"Promotion Picture" established the important position of political satirical comedy in the history of modern drama in China.
