January 21, 1958 The People's Uprising broke out in Venezuela
67 years ago today, on January 21, 1958 (December 2, 1957), the Venezuelan people's uprising broke out. On January 21, 1958, the business community in the Venezuelan capital held a general strike against the government, which quickly turned into a people's uprising. After fierce fighting and the army defected, former President Jimenez was forced to flee to the United States on the 23rd, and the military government of former Navy Commander Wolfgan-Larazabal came to power. On December 7, 1957, the president, the National Assembly and local authorities were elected, and Romulo Betancourt, the leader of the "Democratic PAP (People's Action Party) ", was elected President of the Republic. After the 1948 military coup in Venezuela, Berez-Jimenez's high-pressure and dictatorial behavior towards the country aroused strong dissatisfaction among the people. The armed coup against the dictatorship at the air base near the capital on New Year's Day 1958 was suppressed, and thousands of people were persecuted, further exacerbating the contradictions between the whole country.
