He returned to China in 1906, taught in Guangzhou, and secretly carried out activities in the army. In 1908, he plotted an uprising with Zhao Sheng and others without success. In 1910, he launched the Guangzhou New Army Uprising with Zhao Sheng and others, but failed again. In April of the following year, he participated in the Guangzhou Uprising (Battle of Huanghuagang) led by Huang Xing, served as a "death squad" and invaded the headquarters. After failing, he fled to Hong Kong. When the Revolution of 1911 broke out, he contacted the party and the army to promote the restoration of Guangdong, and served as the chairman of the military government's Senate and president of the Audit Court. After 1913, he actively participated in the anti-Yuan (Shikai) struggle led by Sun Yat-sen and joined the Chinese Revolutionary Party. The following year, he followed Sun Yat-sen to Shanghai and served as an editor of the Republic of China Daily and Construction magazine.
