61 years ago today, on January 29, 1964 (December 15, 1963 lunar calendar), the 9th Olympic Winter Games were held in Innsbruck, Austria. Fleming, a 15-year-old American elite athlete, was selected to participate in the 1964 Innsbruck, Austria. Due to the failure to snow in time for the 9th Winter Olympics, people had to transport the snow from the Alps to the stadium. After arduous preparations, today, Austrian President Adolf Schaefer announced the official opening of the Winter Olympics at the Yissel Mountain Stadium in a silver world. A total of 36 countries and 1,332 athletes participated in the Winter Games. At the opening ceremony, the Olympic flame from Greece lit the torch in the stadium, and a total of 60,000 people watched the ceremony.
