On this day, 55 years ago, March 23, 1970 (February 16, 1970, the National United Front of Cambodia was established. Zhou Enlai (2 from left) and North Korean leader Kim Il Sung (1 from left) congratulated Prince Sihanouk (1 from right). On March 23, 1970, the establishment of the Cambodia National United Front was announced in Beijing. Since Prince Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia always pursued pro-China and pro-North Vietnamese policies during his administration, he was reacted by pro-American factions in the country. On March 18, 1970, instigated by the United States, the Lono Shrimada Group of Cambodia took advantage of Sihanouk's visit abroad to launch a coup, deposing Prince Sihanouk as head of state and replacing it with the "Cambodia's National Salvation Government." On May 5, the National United Front of Cambodia, chaired by Sihanouk, announced its political program, pointing out that the overall goal is to "achieve the broadest national unity, overthrow the authoritarian rule of the running dogs of the U.S. imperialism led by Lon Nor and Shrimada, defend national independence, peace, neutrality, sovereignty and territorial integrity of existing borders, and build a people's, free and democratic regime. Then build a prosperous Cambodia in accordance with the deep aspirations of our people." The Front led the struggle of the Cambodia people until national liberation in April 1975.
