On this day, 32 years ago, May 9, 1993 (March 18, 1993, the lunar calendar), Jiang Zemin demanded that deep-seated economic problems be solved. On May 9, 1993, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President Jiang Zemin presided over a symposium on economic work in six provinces and one city in East China in Shanghai. Jiang Zemin asked all provinces and cities to actively, comprehensively and correctly understand and implement Deng Xiaoping's important remarks during his inspection of the south and the spirit of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, further deepen reforms, accelerate the establishment and improvement of the socialist market economic system, resolve deep-seated economic problems through deepening reforms, and promote the smooth development of my country's reform, opening up, and modernization drive. Jiang Zemin emphasized that Comrade Deng Xiaoping's important speech and the spirit of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of China are important guiding ideology for our party to lead and organize economic development and reform work. Fundamentally speaking, they are problems that occurred in the process of economic system transformation. Therefore, the key to solving these contradictions and problems in the process of progress lies in accelerating the pace of reform and opening up. Further deepening reforms and accelerating the establishment and improvement of the socialist market economic system is a complex systematic project that requires planned and step-by-step study and resolution of a series of major issues. Therefore, leading cadres at all levels must conscientiously study the basic knowledge and basic laws of the socialist market economy, and absorb and learn from successful practices of capitalist countries that reflect the general laws of the market economy. We must go deep into reality, conduct investigation and research, be good at discovering the creations of the masses, and promptly summarize universal and regular experience to guide the overall situation. We must proceed from reality, respect objective laws, avoid falsehood and exaggeration, and strive to improve the level of leadership in economic and reform work.
